چکیده

In many areas of industry, it is desirable to create geometric models of existing objects for which no such model is available. This paper reviews the process of reverse engineering of shapes. After identifying the purpose of reverse engineering and the main application areas, the most important algorithmic steps are outlined and various reconstruction strategies are presented. Pros and cons of various data acquisition techniques are described with related problems of boundary representation model construction. Specific issues addressed include characterization of geometric models and related surface representations, segmentation and surface fitting for simple and freeform shapes, multiple view combination and creating consistent and accurate B-rep models. The limitations of currently known solutions are also described, and we point out areas in which further work is required before reverse engineering of shape becomes a practical, widely-available engineering tool.

Reverse Engineering of Complex-shape Surfaces

The article presents issues connected with coordinate measurements of complex-shape surfaces. These measurements are presented on the example of carrying out the reverse engineering process of objects described with the use of free surface patches. The introduction to the article comprises a presentation of the B-spline method. This method has been applied to constructing geometric models of th...

A Hybrid 3D Colon Segmentation Method Using Modified Geometric Deformable Models

Introduction: Nowadays virtual colonoscopy has become a reliable and efficient method of detecting primary stages of colon cancer such as polyp detection. One of the most important and crucial stages of virtual colonoscopy is colon segmentation because an incorrect segmentation may lead to a misdiagnosis.  Materials and Methods: In this work, a hybrid method based on Geometric Deformable Models...
